Last Will and Testament0

“I, Sharae Cua, being of sound mind and body, and CKTV Media student of 3 years now departing to high school, hereby leave my stubbornness, iPad, and love and passion for media, behind to the next upcoming media students that will be in the class of 2013-2014. And hope they will use these skills and tools well when it comes to their turn to shine.”

I am leaving my leadership skills/stubbornness to the next media students in the upcoming school year of 2013-2014 who want to be a leader and want to prove a point that they are correct. Although many people will become annoyed with your stubbornness and might not be able to put up with it, it will help you stand your ground when picking a topic for a project. If you truly feel your topic will help you, stand your ground and go for it. Also, your stubbornness will motivate you. Me being stubborn sure motivated me because I would want and need for things to go my way, otherwise I will roll my eyes at you and say “Whatever you say… I don’t care.” or some sort of words like that. Although it’s not lovely to be around, it motivates you to finish the project yourself so that you can do it your way. Hey, if the other person doesn’t wanna do it your way, you gotta do it yourself. I hope being stubborn won’t get you into too many trouble, but instead, help you complete things on time and stand your ground in things if you believe you’re right. But just saying, if you run into another stubborn person, WATCH OUT.

I will be leaving my iPad to whoever is lucky enough to receive my iPad. Although it will be wiped clean and everyone else will leave their iPads behind, mine is much more special than your typical iPad. That iPad helped me write 2 national award winning Spot Feature video scripts, possibly in less than 10-30 minutes. When you’re in competition, you have to hurry up, and that iPad sure helped me. Sure it got stolen a year ago and was found in a trash can, but it’s still pretty good that it can be used to write 2 scripts that won 1 1st place and 1 2nd place national award winning scripts for a video. It also comes in handy during practices to take notes and create outlines, so I hope whoever receives my iPad next year takes good care of it, hopefully a better job than I did with it, other I will come back from Kauai High School and I will rip it out of your hands and take it back. Haha nah jk, but I do hope whoever gets it takes care of it.

Lastly, I will leave my love, passion and competitiveness to all of the media students next year. I am very competitive and when I go for something, I expect to win. I have a drive to win national awards, and that drive helped me win 3 first place national awards (including the STN Challenge) and 1 second place award. My love and passion for media is what got me to win those awards, and go to STN to compete and get a wonderful experience. Although I might be lazy (kind of a lot actually), I love being in media, competing, and being a reporter. I may have learned the hard way that interviewing kids may just be one of the hardest things ever, I don’t regret that time and am so glad I was fortunate enough to spend 3 years in the  CKTV crew.

Final Project? It’s DONE!!!0

Hey guys!!! OH MY GOSH SO I LITERALLY CANNOT BELIEVE THAT MANDY AND I ACTUALLY TURNED IN OUR FINAL PROJECT WHICH MIGHT I ADD, WAS A SPOT FEATURE/NEWS STORY. Sorry for yelling, but I had to emphasize this because I seriously can’t believe that we actually turned it in. Now too many days ago, I was staying up till 11:30-1:00 am each night just trying to get some work done on  the video because we procrastinated so much. I think we did a pretty decent job on the story, although it wasn’t the very best because we procrastinated so much. However, I still think it came out pretty good and I’m proud that we finished up our final project and 3rd and final year in media strong.

Teacher Appreciation Day0

This week Tuesday was Teacher Appreciation Day. Over the years, I’ve had many wonderful teachers that have helped me in a lot of different subjects. I can’t exactly choose just one teacher that stood out the most, so I think I’ll just talk about 3 different teachers who were amazing and that I was fortunate enough to have.

The first teacher that was really good was Mrs. Chiba. Mrs. Chiba was my math teacher in 7th grade and she was an amazing teacher. Sure her class was tough, but she did such a good job at explaining and actually teaching her students how to do the problems or lessons, and would explain it thoroughly. If you had a question, you could easily ask her and she would take time to explain it to you so that you understand. If you needed help on something, you could stay after school in her tutoring class for extra help or to work on a test you didn’t finish. I learned so much in her class and I learned it well.

Another amazing teacher I had was Mrs. Wada. Mrs. Wada was my teacher in 3rd grade. She was such a fun teacher because she made teaching fun and would motivate us to finish our work on time, clean up, etc. One of the ways she would motivate us to do well in her class was by letting us play Heads Up, 7 Up. What we would have to do is do really well in school that day (completing our work, participating, etc.) and at the end, pack up as quickly as possible and be quiet and wait patiently. She would then reward us by letting us play. It was really funny because we would always get so into it and every single child in that class would try to do their absolute best to be able to play.

The last teacher that I really enjoyed having is Mr. M. Being in his class is not only a lot of hard work, but it’s also fun. When we go on our trips, we work hard and play hard. I learned so much in his class as well from writing tips to camera angles. I was also fortunate enough to be on 4 winning teams for STN (counting the STN Challenge team) in my 3 years of being in the class. It feels good to be a national winner and to know that you’ve placed or won in a national competition 3 times. If I never joined this class, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve so much and realize that I enjoy to create videos and be a reporter in front of the camera. I also would have never learned how to properly be a reporter and edit and I never would have known how I’m actually pretty fast and good at editing and not that bad at reporting.

I would like to thank all of the teachers I have had over the years because they were all wonderful teachers. Even if I didn’t mention you in this blog, it doesn’t mean I hated them or that they were a horrible teacher. I was fortunate enough to have many wonderful teachers so I only mentioned a few in this blog. Being a teacher is an extremely hard job because it requires certain skills to allow you to work well with children and A BUNCH of patience. Thank you again for being such wonderful teachers and for doing your job well. I hope you had a wonderful Teacher Appreciation day!

1 week to go! Time is running out…1

From today, there is exactly one week left until our final media project is due. So basically, time is running out very quickly. Mandy and I pretty much finished up our script with the exception of placing the b-roll onto the sound bytes. But… It’s only our first draft and we haven’t shown Mr.M yet. Sure we can edit fast, but you can’t edit without a script that has been approved. We’re really starting to feel the pressure now. I really hope to finish the script this weekend so we can show Mr. M possibly this weekend if we email it to him, or by Monday. I’m literally praying and hoping for a miracle that our script will be approved the first time around, but that’ll be a challenge. It’s extremely rare for the script to be approved the first time around, no matter how good of a writer you are. It’d be nice to have the script approved first thing, but then again, I want it to also be good. It is our fault that we let time pass by so quickly and now, we’re stuck with the pressure. Wish us luck on finishing and getting it approved!!

Being Responsible0

This week in class, we’ve talked a lot about being responsible. We talked a lot about it because some people have left equipment out and haven’t put it away, or returned it, or borrowed someone else’s things without permission, etc. which lead us to this week’s constructed response journal topic which is about being responsible.

In our lives, it’s important to be responsible because it can help keep us organized and on track with things. If you aren’t responsible with say, your baseball equipment and uniforms, you might misplace it which can lead to you not playing in your game because you weren’t prepared or showed you can’t be trusted with your own equipment. That’s another thing about being responsible. If you are responsible, chances are, you’ll be trusted more with things like staying home alone for the first time, walking to the mall after school, with a new iPhone 5, etc. If you show people you are responsible and can be trusted, chances are good things will happen and you’ll be trusted with bigger and better things because you have shown you could take care of it.

We can be and show responsibilities everywhere with everyone in life. For example, at school, you have to be responsible to do your homework and study for your test. Or make sure you bring in the poster board for your science project. You can be responsible by showing that you want to learn something. With your family at home, you can be responsible by doing your chores. Doing the dishes without being asked, cleaning your room, etc. It’ll show that you can be responsible by handling everyday chores.

Lastly, I would say I am a pretty responsible person. Sure I might procrastinate a bit at first or complain (sometimes :P ) but you can count on me to get the job done if I said I would. I like to show people that I can be trusted with things and I’d rather just do something instead of getting in trouble for not doing something. However, I could improve by not procrastinating AT ALL in the beginning and just getting to whatever it is that I need to do. But other than that, I’m a pretty responsible person.

Being responsible in life, with your family and friends, in school, work, or home, and as a person in general is a good thing because it’ll show that you can handle things well, you can be trusted, and you might receive things that you want(ed) as a reward b

Interview is done!0

I have great news! Well, you can probably already tell by the blog title, but I’ll tell you anyway. Mandy and my interview is done! Yes!! And if you’re wondering why it’s juts “interview” it’s because we’re doing a Spot Feature story. We filmed the interview on Tuesday in the afternoon and it took a while to get done. Only because our subject is kind of old (93 years old!) and her children, who she preferred to interview her, prompted her for each question. It was her own answer and everything, just she had a hard time remembering (and they rehearsed the interview previously) her answers. We also had to get her to talk a little bit more, but it all worked out and she gave us a lot of good information and personal answers and experiences. The interview was worth the time and all, just that it took us a little longer to get.

However, Mandy and I were able to transcribe all of her answers in the interviews already, so hopefully during this weekend, we can work on some sort of script, or at least a draft. We are kind of behind on our project considering that it should be done in about 2 weeks, but I have absolutely no doubts that we’ll finish on time and that it’ll be a good project that also pleases her and her family. It is stressing me out a bit, because the deadline is slowly getting closer, but it’s my fault we procrastinated so much, and we’re facing the consequences. But, I think we’ll be able to get a good final project, and get it done on time closing up our last year in Media well.

Best Lesson Learned0

This week’s constructed response blog topic is on the Best Lesson we’ve learned in Media. Since I’ve been in Media for 3 years, I’ve learned a bunch of important lessons that will help me in both life and media. Although procrastination is a big thing, I have to say that the best and most important lesson I’ve learned in media, is that if you don’t get off your butt to complete something and just wait for things to finish themselves, nothing will ever get done.

The first reason why I think this is the best lesson I’ve learned is because I’ve actually made this mistake, quite a few times before and I’ve learned it the hard way. I have waited for my filming and whole project to just finish by itself, and I didn’t do anything about it because I just waited around. That was a big mistake because I ended up rushing to finish filming and editing and I stressed out a lot. I get stressed pretty easily, and when I do, I just worry about it 24/7 although I know there is absolutely nothing I can do about it. It’s a horrible feeling, and a hard way to learn this lesson.

The second reason why is because everyone tends to wait for their homework, papers for work, projects, etc. to get done by themselves because, truthfully, nobody likes to do work. And everyone can be lazy sometimes. If you end up stressing out at the end or not completing it on time, it can cost you a grade or maybe even a job. It’s really hard to learn a lesson this way, and I wouldn’t want anyone to have to learn this lesson this way, so I’d like everyone to know about it and how to avoid it.

Lastly, this is the best lesson I learned because like I mentioned earlier, it can also apply to real life, sports, work, etc. For example, say you want to get better at serving in volleyball. You can’t just wish for your arm to magically become stronger and you to be able to serve the ball over the net with no problem. You have to practice at it over and over again to get it right. Or for work or school, you have to write an essay by next week Tuesday. You can’t want a good grade and wait for it to write itself. You have to get yourself to sit down with a paper and pencil, or at a computer, and write the essay yourself if you want it to be completed and have a chance at getting a good grade.

In my 3 years in the CKTV Media class, the most important lesson I learned was that if you want something to get done, you have to get up and do it yourself because if you just wait for it to be magically completed by itself, it will never be finished. This lesson is good to know now because it isn’t fun to learn it the hard way and it applies to real life.

How Animals Eat0

I wanted to tell you about this cool video I found on YouTube. The video is called “How Animals Eat”. This video is about 2 guys eating salad and one of the guys decide to show his friend how animals would eat their food. It’s really a funny video and it’d surely make you smile. The video was uploaded to YouTube about 3 weeks ago and already, it went viral. The video has over 51 million hits on YouTube and about 599,000 likes. In such a small amount of time, the video went viral pretty quickly.

What I like about this video is how creative it is. It definitely takes creativity to show how a Lizard or a Tyrannosaurus Rex would eat their food, or in this case, a salad. The video is a comedy so it’s really funny. The other thing I admire is the making of this video. It seriously must have took a long time to shoot this video because every single time you reshoot something or move on to the next animal, you have to set up the salad again. The lettuce usually goes flying so either it takes a long time for it to be picked up, or they just used a BUNCH of  lettuce. Also, during the whole video, the friend who is supposed to be observing just sits there, eats his salad, and doesn’t care about what his friend is doing. That must have been really hard because the video is really funny, and the other guy cannot laugh, smile, etc. at all. If it were me, we wouldn’t finish filming past the first animal because I’d probably crack up each time after the animal “eats”. That man must have a lot of self-control to not laugh uncontrollably. Lastly, when the last animal (The Rhinoceros) is supposed to eat, the guy just basically head butts the table and knocks over his friend. The poor guy has probably been run over many times, and he’d have to not get hurt, although he probably did anyway.

This video is really funny and interesting so if you ever want to laugh or smile, watch this video. If you would like to watch “How Animals Eat”, click here.

Tick…Tock… Time is ticking…0

This week’s constructed response topic is an update on our 4th quarter project. So as you may or may not know I am working with Mandy for our final project. As our project, we are going to do a Spot Feature on Mrs. Kurokawa, a woman who was arrested during World War II because she is a Japanese American and was put into a place like an internment camp. Mandy and I are procrastinating once again. We actually were going to film the interview with Mrs. Kurokawa today but things didn’t exactly work out because she and her children were busy today and I got a concussion :(

However, we are hoping to work something out with them to film this upcoming week or maybe on the weekend or after school. It kind of depends on what her and her children’s schedules are like because we’re trying to work around their schedules because they are doing us the favor. It also sort of depends on how my head is. I got the concussion on Friday, but I’m still experiencing symptoms like dizziness and  vomiting :( But, if they can do it sometime this week, I’m just going to suck it up, do the interview, and then I can rest again as we transcribe, do the script, ect.
Yes, I know that we are behind schedule on this project because we  haven’t filmed yet and I’m not proud of it. Things didn’t really work in our favor this week, and sometimes, that’s just how it goes. However, we still had quite some time to film before this and we didn’t take advantage of that time.
Although we are behind, I have absolutely no doubt that we will meet the deadline on time because Mandy and I know how to work together, and how to work fast. We also know that if we want this to be good, we need to get moving. I have no doubt that we can do this because we made a national award winning video just like this one in 5 hours. If we could do it in competition, we can do it now. We just have to get off our butts and start going. Mandy and I can work fast though, we can edit pretty decent work in a matter of hours. If we have a few weeks to edit, then I know and expect for us to produce really good work. We can also transcribe quickly and produce a decent script in a good amount of time. But just because we can work quickly doesn’t mean we should wait till the very last minute and rush. We should’ve started a while ago and maybe be transcribing or filming b-roll by now. But, I’m going to keep my word on us turning our project in, ON TIME.
We did make the mistake of waiting for things to start and finish themselves, which we know we shouldn’t have done, but I know that we can get this project finished and done well on time. We just need to get moving.

Dancing With the Stars!!!0

Lately, I’ve been really addicted to Dancing with the Stars. For those of you who don’t know what Dancing with the Stars is, it’s a dance competition between one celebrity and a professional dancer that’s paired up into a couple to dance every week. Every Monday, every couple performs together and on Tuesday, one couple is eliminated. So far the couples that I’ve been cheering for are still in :D Some celebrities on the show is Alexandra (Aly) Raisman, a Gold Medalist Olympic Gymnast, Kellie Pickler, a country singer, Zendaya Coleman, Disney Actress, Singer, and Dancer, and Jacoby Jones, Super bowl winner. I love this season’s teams and they’re all such great dancers, I love watching the show and I think I’m addicted to it . :P

One thing I really like about the show, are all of the camera shots. They’re always steady, solid, and at really interesting angles. You can always see exactly what the dancer is doing and their facial expressions. I also like this projector thing they have, sometimes they put a certain setting on the dance floor, for example, a flower garden, then they shoot the angle from the top and it looks as if the dancers are dancing in a meadow! It’s so cool! I give a lot of credit to the camera crew though, the dancers move A LOT around the dance floor and they have to follow them quickly enough and steady enough to see exactly what the dancers are doing. If I were a camera person, I’d probably lose the dancers showing the viewers an empty dance floor or something like that. During quick dances like the quick step or the tango, the camera men have to work really quickly and well to keep up with the dancer’s steps.

I think the reason why I like the show so much is not only because it’s fun to watch the celebrities and the professionals dance, but also because the shots are so clear and well shot. Usually, if a show is shot horribly, I’ll just change the channel because the horrible shots bother or annoy me. If you would like to watch Dancing with the Stars as well, it’s on ABC which is on Channel 4 on Monday nights at 7 pm Hawaii time and Tuesday nights at 8 pm. It’s really an entertaining show to watch and I think that a lot of people out there would like it if they don’t already watch it!
